Don Belt on Slow Journalism

March 11, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm CST

Don Belt on Slow Journalism

WHEN: Thursday, March 11, from 11 a.m.—12:30 p.m.
WHERE: https://utexas.zoom.us/j/96868086798

A longtime writer and editor for National Geographic, Don Belt is an award-winning journalist, educator and public speaker. With over three decades reporting the world, he brings a global and humanistic perspective to a range of projects, from collaborating on the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Out of Eden Walk” project, to editing the first-ever National Geographic retrospective on Islam, to exploring the frontiers of journalism in the digital age.

In this talk, Belt will discuss the slow journalism approach to reporting he helped develop through his work with Paul Salopek and his “Out of Eden Walk.” Salopek’s 7-year, 22,000 mile trek from Ethiopia to Tierra del Fuego, is a uniquely powerful multimedia storytelling project that covers the major stories of our time—from climate change to technological innovation, from mass migration to cultural survival—by retracing the route of human migration and giving voice to the people who live with these issues every day.

This event is sponsored by the School of Journalism and the Moody College Honors Program.
