National Young Women’s Day of Action guest Dr. Danielle Fuentes Morgan: “Pop Culture, TV & Black Women’s Friendships”
October 21, 2020 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm CDT

Since 2010, the Gender and Sexuality Center at UT Austin has hosted National Young Women’s Day of Action (NYWDA), an event dedicated to the political activism of young women. NYWDA is organized with the aim to encourage political involvement and provide a forum for raising general awareness about issues that range from equal rights to gender, sexual, and racial equity. Each year, in observance of NYWDA, we bring a feminist speaker to campus for a keynote and Q&A. This year, in partnership with the Radio-Television-Film department and the Warfield Center for African and African American Studies, we are bringing Danielle Fuentes Morgan!
Dr. Morgan is a professor at Santa Clara University & the author of “Laughing to Keep from Dying”, a book on African American satire in the 21st century. For NYWDA, Dr. Morgan will be doing a keynote on Black women’s friendships in pop culture, specifically the ways in which Black television comedies (and comedy-dramas) like Insecure, Girlfriends, and Living Single can operate as a form of social justice in creating and disseminating portrayals of Black women that are otherwise missing from popular culture. We will also hear an introduction and questions from our student speaker, Zaria El-Fil.
ACCESSIBILITY STATEMENT: ASL interpretation and closed captioning is available upon request. Please email gsc@austin.utexas.edu at least 3 days ahead of the event.
