“What We Leave Behind” Film Screening, Q&A, and Reception
April 7, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm CDT

The Latino Media Arts and Studies program and the Department of Radio-Television-Film are proud to co-sponsor a public screening of filmmaker and RTF Assistant Professor Iliana Sosa’s poetic documentary, WHAT WE LEAVE BEHIND. This screening follows on the heels of the film’s World Premiere at SXSW 2022, where it won the Louis Black “Lone Star” Award and the Fandor New Voices Award, as well as its New York City premiere at the Museum of the Moving Image. WHAT WE LEAVE BEHIND is Sosa’s first feature-length documentary and follows her grandfather, Julián, as he takes one last bus ride to El Paso, Texas, to visit his daughters and their children, then quietly starts building a new house in rural Mexico. Filmed over a period of several years, the film unfolds as a love letter to Sosa’s grandfather, as well as an intimate and insightful exploration of her own relationship with him and his homeland in rural Mexico. Sosa was named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in 2020 and one of DOC NYC’s “40 Under 40” in 2021.
After the screening, there will be a Q&A with the filmmaker, Iliana Sosa, moderated by Mirasol Enríquez (L-MAS Director and Assistant Professor of RTF). A reception at the DMC 5th floor lobby will also follow.
Please register here.
A zoom link for the Q&A portion of the event will also be provided for registrants who are unable to attend in-person. Note: The screening will NOT be available virtually, only the Q&A portion will stream at approximately 5:15 PM CT
This event is free and open to the public and guests are encouraged to wear face masks.
